The Algarve and water sports

With 155 km of Atlantic coastline, sea temperatures ranging from 17 °C in winter to 24 °C in summer, and predominantly favourable winds, the Algarve is one of Europe's most complete water activities destinations. The coast naturally divides into two profiles: the west coast, facing the open Atlantic with consistent swell, is perfect for surfing and windsurfing; the south coast, more sheltered with warmer waters, is ideal for snorkelling, kayaking, diving, sailing and marine wildlife watching.

The range of schools, hire centres and operators is vast. Practically every main beach has at least one water sports centre, and safety and training standards have improved greatly in recent years, making the Algarve accessible even to those who have never tried water sports.

🏄 Surfing — The Best Waves

The Algarve has one of Portugal's most diverse surf offerings. The Costa Vicentina on the west coast receives Atlantic swell with enough energy to generate quality waves throughout the year. The south coast has friendlier breaks for beginners.

Praia do Amado (Carrapateira)

The most consistent break on the Costa Vicentina and one of the most popular in Portugal. Works in almost all wind conditions and has several surf schools at the beach. The bay configuration relatively shelters the waves from northerly winds, and the sandy bottom is forgiving when you fall. Level: beginners to advanced.

Praia da Bordeira (Carrapateira)

Less well-known than Amado, but with one of the most beautiful waves on the coast. The left-hander off the river sandbank is particularly appreciated by experienced surfers. The landscape beauty — huge dunes, the estuary, the cliffs — makes a session here a complete experience. Level: intermediate to advanced.

Praia da Arrifana (Aljezur)

A beach with personality. The black schist cliff framing it creates a unique atmosphere, and the wave has quality on medium swell days. Has a small village with restaurants and accommodation. Level: all levels depending on conditions.

Praia do Tonel & Praia da Mareta (Sagres)

Sagres has multiple quality breaks on its exposed beaches. Tonel is known for tubular waves on big swell days. Mareta, more sheltered, is ideal for beginners in its usual conditions. Level: all levels.

Meia Praia (Lagos)

On the south coast, Meia Praia has gentler but consistent swell, making it popular among beginners. Several surf schools operate here with rental equipment and daily lessons. Level: beginners and intermediates.

🚣 Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Kayaking and SUP are two of the fastest-growing water activities in the Algarve. They offer a unique perspective of the coast — from inside caves to spotting octopuses and sea urchins in the crystal-clear waters of the central coast.

Kayaking to Benagil

The kayak trip to Benagil Cave (Algar de Benagil) is one of the Algarve's most popular experiences. Departures are normally from Benagil Beach or Carvoeiro Beach, and the route passes several caves, arches and beaches inaccessible on foot. Entering the cave requires some paddling technique — not recommended in rough sea. Local operators rent single and double kayaks, and there are also guided tours.

SUP in the Ria Formosa

The calm, sheltered waters of the Ria Formosa are perfect for stand-up paddleboarding. Several centres in Faro, Olhão and Tavira offer board rental and guided tours through the lagoon's channels. Multi-hour circuits are possible exploring the barrier islands and spotting flamingos, herons and other wildlife.

Sea Kayaking in Lagos

Lagos operators organise sea kayak tours to Ponta da Piedade — a collection of extraordinarily beautiful limestone caves, arches and stacks accessible only from the sea. It's one of the most popular experiences on the Barlavento and can be combined with snorkelling at the clearest spots.

🤿 Snorkelling & Scuba Diving

Algarve waters have an average visibility of 10–15 metres and host rich marine biodiversity, including octopus, sea bream, bass, rays, flatfish and, occasionally, sea turtles and dolphins in more offshore areas.

Best snorkelling spots

  • Praia da Marinha (Lagoa) — crystal-clear waters with rocky bottoms rich in marine life. Accessible by swimming from the beach.
  • Praia dos Três Castelos (Portimão) — little-frequented area with good rocky bottoms
  • Ponta da Piedade (Lagos) — the caves have a white sand bottom with transparent water
  • Ilha de Tavira — excellent snorkelling in gentle current areas near the inlets

Scuba Diving

The Algarve has several PADI-certified diving centres, with outings to rock dives, caves and some wrecks. The most well-known include:

  • São Domingos Wreck (Portimão) — at 25 metres depth, one of the most popular dive sites
  • Pedra do Medo (Sagres) — rock walls rich in sponges and anemones
  • Restinga do Cão (Costa Vicentina) — habitat of large groupers and rays

The diving season runs from May to October, with best visibility in July and August. Several centres offer discover dives (guided experience without certification requirement).

⛵ Sailing, Catamarans & Dolphins

Catamaran Trips

One of the most popular activities in the Algarve, catamaran trips combine relaxation, snorkelling and cave visits in a single half-day or full-day outing. Most depart from the marinas of Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira or Vilamoura. Food and drinks are normally served on board. Many trips include stops for swimming and snorkelling in secluded coves.

Dolphin Watching

The Algarve has one of the densest populations of Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the northern European Atlantic. Watching tours depart from Portimão, Lagos and Albufeira with very high success rates. Summer months are most productive, but dolphins can be seen year-round. Responsible operators follow approach and non-disturbance guidelines.

Sailing & Sailing Cruises

Vilamoura marina is the Algarve's largest sailing hub. Here you can hire sailing boats with or without a skipper, take sailing lessons, or board coastal cruises of one or more days. The Algarve's south coast is technically more accessible than the west coast, with fewer currents and sheltered ports at regular intervals.

Sport Fishing

The Algarve is an internationally renowned sport fishing destination, with regular catches of bluefin tuna, swordfish, sea bream and sea bass. Fishing boat outings depart from all marinas. Some species are subject to catch limits — responsible operators practise catch and release.

💨 Windsurfing & Kitesurfing

Wind conditions in the Algarve are ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing, especially at Meia Praia (Lagos) and Cabanas de Tavira (Sotavento). The northerly wind (nortada) that blows in summer creates excellent conditions for both disciplines.

Meia Praia (Lagos)

The biggest windsurfing and kitesurfing spot on the Barlavento. The long beach and consistent wind conditions attract windsurfers from all over Europe. There are hire centres with quality equipment and lessons for all levels. Wind is strongest in the afternoon (summer nortada).

Cabanas de Tavira

On the Sotavento, the Ria Formosa waters near Cabanas de Tavira are a kitesurfing paradise — flat water, consistent wind and shallow bottoms that make learning easier. It is one of Portugal's best kitesurfing spots and regularly hosts international competitions.

Sagres — Wave Windsurfing

For experienced windsurfers who want real waves, Sagres and the west coast offer epic wave-sailing conditions in autumn and winter. The Atlantic exposure guarantees quality waves for advanced manoeuvres.

📋 General Tips

Best season by activity

  • Surfing: September–May on the west coast; Summer on the south coast (smaller waves, warmer)
  • Kayak & SUP: April–October (calmer seas more guaranteed)
  • Diving: May–October (best visibility)
  • Windsurfing/Kitesurfing: May–September (most consistent nortada)
  • Dolphins: Year-round, most active June–September

Safety

Always opt for licensed operators with liability insurance. For surfing and kayaking, always wear a life jacket in open water. Check weather conditions before heading out — wind and swell can change quickly on the Algarve coast.

Booking

At the peak of summer (July–August), the most popular activities (Benagil, dolphins, catamaran) book up days or weeks in advance. Book ahead, especially if travelling with family.
